"Home is where one starts from. As we grow older the world becomes stranger, the pattern more complicated of dead and living. Not the intense moment, isolated, with no before and after, but a lifetime burning in every moment. And not the lifetime of one man only, but of old stones that cannot be deciphered." ----- T. S. Eliot, 1888-1965 "Four Quartets, East Coker" (1940)

Interesting name, interesting face, interesting beard(!). Wonderful photograph, Lisa.
ReplyDeleteWell Celia...I don't think that is a beard. However...it could be I suppose. I got the impression it was something for warmth. I just don't know. This photo was taken from a portrait up on the wall of one of my husband's relatives. I think it must have been a painting. My husband says he definitely looks either Black or Indian. Out of all the researchers on the Cundiffs I have yet to hear of any of them finding there was mixed blood. I have not done a lot on this lineage myself, so, yeah...interesting face, LOL! And of course I love his and his father's names..Meshack and Shadrack!
DeleteI have a couple Shadracks but no Meshacks.
ReplyDeleteIs the portrait charcoal? If so, that might explain why he looks Black or Indian. (aside from the cheek bones)
I wish I knew Wendy. It was a lot of years ago...the 1980s, that we were up there and saw the portrait. It may have been charcoal.
DeleteInteresting, believe it or not I actually have that in my possession. He is my great, great, great grandfather. I got it from my grandmother and I'm guessing that is where you took the photo of it? Campbellsville, Ky?
