Tombstone Tuesday: Family of Leonidas P. Newby

Leonidas Perry Newby was the son of Jacob N. and Levina (Leonard) Newby and the brother of my maternal great, great grandfather, John A. Newby. He married Mary Elizabeth Breckenridge in 1876 and they had two children: Florence "Floss" Newby who married (and divorced) Marsh P. Cooper, and Floyd J. Newby who married Mary H. Lewis. Floyd was attorney for the sale of the farmhouse owned by my maternal great grandparents, Charles Lee and Ida May (Trowbridge) Newby, in Spiceland Township, Henry Co., Indiana. and also the attorney signing the will of Millie (Trowbridge) McMullen, Ida May Newby's sister. I have in my possession a copy of the complete title abstract for the farmhouse from the earliest date to the 1970s, and an original copy of Millie's will.

All five Newbys below are buried in Glen Cove Cemetery, Knightstown, Henry Co., Indiana

Amanuensis Monday: The Will of Millie McMullen

Milla Jane (Trowbridge) McMullen

Millie was born in Rush Co. Indiana in 1869 and died 35 years later in Knightstown, Henry Co., Indiana. She was the daughter of John Calvin and Phoebe (Cook) Trowbridge, sister of my great grandmother Ida May Newby, and wife of Henry McMullen. Millie had no descendants.

The copy of Millie's will that I have in my possession, is the original copy given to my great grandparents, Charles Lee and Ida May (Trowbridge) Newby in 1905 by the family attorney, Floyd J. Newby, first cousin of Charles.

Last Will and Testament of Millie McMullen

I, Millie J. McMullen, of Knightstown, Henry County, Indiana, being of sound mind and disposing memory, do make and publish this my last will and testament.

Item 1. I hereby will, devise and bequeath to my sister Ida M. Newby, wife of Charles L. Newby my farm in Henry County, Indiana, containing 33 1/2 acres more or less described as follows: - The west division of the West half of the northwest quarter of section 25, township 16 north of Range 8 east bounded as follows: - Commencing at the Northwest corner of said quarter section and running thence south on the west line thereof 162 rods and 12 1/2 links to the Southwest corner of said quarer section; Thence east 33 rods and 1 5/6 links; Thence north 162 rods and 12 1/2 links to the north line of said quarter section at a point 33 rods and 1 5/6 links east of the place of beginning; Thence west to the place of beginning.

Also all that part of Lot number 66, in section number 2 in Glencove Cemetary at the Town of Knightstown, Henry County, Indiana, that remains unused after my death.

The said Ida M. Newby shall pay to my nephew, Arthur M. Trowbridge the sum of $500.00 in cash either from the proceeds of the sale of the property devised to her in Item 1 herein or any other manner she may elect.

The said Ida M. Newby shall pay all my just debts, my funeral expenses and the costs of the probate of this will.

The said Ida M. Newby shall receive all money and other personal property which I may possess except that which is otherwise willed and bequeathed by me herein.

Item 2. I will and bequeath my household goods to Ida M. Newby and Arthur M. Trowbridge to be held by them equally.

Item 3. I hereby will and bequeath to my nephew Arthur M. Trowbridge mentioned in Item 1 herein the sum of $500.00 in cash to be paid to him as mentioned in Item 1.

Item 4. I will and bequeath to my niece Mary Fern Newby, daughter of Charles L. Newby and Ida M. Newby my gold watch and chain.

Item 5. I hereby constitute and appoint Ida M. Newby as Executrix of this my last will and testament.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this the 22nd. day of March, 1905.

Henry and Milla Jane (Trowbridge) McMullen

Henry and Millie (Trowbridge) Newby - 1890 ca.

Milla Jane, "Millie", was the sister of my maternal great grandmother, Ida May Newby. She was born to John Calvin and Phoebe (Cook) Trowbridge on October 26, 1869. Millie married Henry McMullen on June 3, 1890, probably in Rush Co., Indiana. Their marriage is recorded in Ida May's bible. 

Henry McMullen

Henry was born exactly 2 years ahead of Millie on October 26, 1867. In 1900 Millie and Henry lived with her sister Ida May and brother-in-law Charles Newby on Carey St. in Knightstown, Indiana. Henry was an Engineer in a saw mill. Henry and Millie were married 12 years and Henry died September 25, 1902, just before he turned 35. Millie died three years later on March 26, 1905 at the age of 35. No children from this union.

I have not found a death certificate for Millie but she must have been ill and apparently knew she was dying because she left a will which was dated just a few days before her death. I have my great grandmother's copy of her will. In the will Millie leaves a 33 1/2 acre farm to my great grandmother. This farm was right on the western border of Henry Co., Indiana and, I assume, was purchased after 1900 but before the death of Henry in 1902. The farm was owned by F. M. Kirkpatrick in 1893. In 1900 there is a Fanny Kirkpatrick, age 48 and widowed, boarding with a neighbor of the McMullen's on Carey St. and it is possible the farm belonged to her.

I have been unsuccessful so far in positively identifying the parents of Henry McMullen. Henry and Millie are buried in Glen Cove Cemetery, Knightstown, Henry Co., Indiana, Lot 65.

Ida May's Bible

Ida May Trowbridge Newby 1873-1939 daughter of John Calvin and Phoebe Cook Trowbridge

E-mail to me from my Mom, Janet Runyan Wallen, January 20, 2006:      

"I don't know if I ever told you where the bible was as long as I can remember.  My grandparents had a pedestal stand that it was kept on in their bedroom. I don't remember ever being in the room, but the bible was in a place I could see it and I itched to look at it.  I didn't know Mom had kept it when my grandparents were both dead, and of course Bud and Margaret. Then they moved down here and I still didn't know she had it. I guess Mom thought I wouldn't have an interest in it.  They took so few things with them when they moved down here, just a small trailer of furniture and a few knick knacks.  I always kept it in a bag, but took it out often and it was fragil when I got it.  Know it must have been a surprise to see one almost like it.  Love, Mom."

Ida's Bible was fragile alright, downright crumbling. Mom removed the four pages with family information and after I copied them she put the pages in page protectors and put them in the album that held the Trowbridge and Newby photographs. Mom gave me the Bible itself and I went through it page by page looking for anything hand written or some small item stuck between the pages. Nothing. Absolutely NOTHING!

The Bible was so crumbly that I wrapped the entire thing in plastic wrap so it wouldn't make a mess. Today, I took it out of the wrap one last time so I could photograph it and some of the beautiful illustrations inside. The first 16 pages are missing so there was no copyright date. I believe it to be 1891 or 1892 as one section "Bible Stories for Children" had a copyright date of 1891. Ida May and Charles Lee Newby were married May of 1892 and this Bible was probably a wedding gift, most likely from her mother, Phoebe Cook Trowbridge.

 I've never gotten the impression that my great grandparents were in the least bit religious. I think this Bible sat on that stand up in their bedroom and was never opened until someone was born, or died, or got married. It's importance was not spiritual but rather a place to record important dates. I'm willing to bet I've seen more of the inside of this Bible than any ancestor before me and I certainly thank God for preserving the pages inside for me to find and marvel over. They are one of my most cherished family treasures.

The first recordings in our Bible look to me to have been carefully copied from another source. Her mother's Bible maybe? On the Memorandum page, in the same ink, same handwriting, same slant and neatness, are the births of 10 Trowbridges: first are Ida's parents, Phoebe and John C., and immediately following are the four half siblings from her mother's first marriage (Phoebe Cook married two John Trowbridges that were related to each other) and then the four siblings from her mother's second marriage, including herself. She recorded her sister Milla as "Milla Jane McMullen" and then, upon realizing her mistake, wrote over the top of McMullen in heavier ink "Trowbridge", to reflect Milla's birth name instead of her married name.  

Likewise on the Births, Deaths and Marriages pages, the ink, the neatness and slant of the handwriting, all appear to be done at the same time. Dates range from Phoebe's birth in 1836 to her death in 1900. If Ida had been given this Bible as a wedding gift, it is my opinion that she did not use it to record important family dates until her mother died. Perhaps upon her mother's death she was given the previous Family Bible and recorded the dates within into her own Bible, I suppose we will never know for sure.

After 1900 each recording takes on it's own character. Different inks are used but the original pen is still around for quite a while. It looks to have contained gold ink, or maybe that particular ink simply had a different fade factor than some of the others. Blue and black ink are used and the handwriting, although Ida's, is just slightly different with each entry, implying that each was done as the event took place.

The last four entries on the death page are definitely in Ida May's daughter's handwriting. My grandmother Mary Fern Newby Runyan recorded her father's death in 1937, her sister's and mother's deaths in 1939 and her brother's death in 1947. I have transcribed below the entries on each of the four pages.
